Google Cultural Institute

Google Art ProjectI’ve discovered something amazing! It’s probably been around ages, but it’s new to me. And, it’s amazing.

I’ve just finished a Lynda.com course on digital painting and in the closing presentation the tutor mentioned other useful/interesting resources.  Amongs other one was the Google Art Project.

The Google Art Project is part of Google’s mission to digitise the world. For the Art Project museums large and small, classic and modern, world-renowned and community-based from over 40 countries have contributed more than 40,000 high-resolution images of works ranging from oil on canvas to sculpture and furniture. Some paintings are available in ‘gigapixel’ format, allowing you to zoom in at brushstroke level to examine incredible detail.

It’s just amazing!!!

So me being a web designer and all, I noticed that the full URL was – http://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/collections?projectId=art-project so I had to have a look at http://www.google.com/culturalinstitute.

Why stop at art when you can have World Wonders as well!

I know Google have come under fire for their work on Streetview, which I think is also amazing (check out our house) but they really are bringing the world into our homes.

Well, must go now as I have some serious gallery meandering to do…
